Prosthetics: Bridges, Dentures, and Partials

Bridges: If you're missing one or more teeth, bridges help maintain the shape of your face, as well as alleviating the stress in your bite by replacing missing teeth. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth and bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been.

Dr. Nukk will recontour the teeth on either side of the missing tooth by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin. Several impressions of the prepared teeth will be taken and sent to a lab which will construct the bridge. Dr. Nukk will make you a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth while the bridge is being fabricated. Usually at the second visit, he will fit your new bridge over your teeth. A few adjustments will be made and Dr. Nukk may temporarily cement your bridge in for a period of a few weeks. Occasionally, the bridge can be permanently cemented at the second visit.

Complete and Partial Dentures:
There are two types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower part of the mouth. Partial dentures can replace several teeth, but not all of the teeth in an arch. Complete dentures are held in place through suction, or the close adaptation of the denture base to the surface area of your tissues. Partial dentures are held in place by metal clasps which wrap around remaining teeth.

The denture process takes about one month and approximately five appointments. When the initial diagnosis is made, an impression and a bite registration are taken to determine your vertical dimension (distance from a point on your nose to a point on your chin) and proper jaw position. At the next appointment a "try-in" is placed to assure proper tooth color, contour and fit. The "try-in" is then sent to the lab for fabrication of the final appliance. If this is your first denture, you should be aware that they take a little patience getting used to. Most patients find that they're speaking normally within a few hours, however, the process of adjustment is different for everybody.
